[W]hether Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, or Cecily Brown, influential art dealer Larry Gagosian represents the world’s most prominent artists. And it was while in Paris, a leading art capital, that he twice chose to expand his exhibition spaces in Europe.

This renowned but discreet art dealer heads up 13 galleries across the world, and was quick to show his fondness for France and the City of Light by opening not one but two spaces devoted to exhibitions of almost museum-like proportions. Firstly, in 2010, he decided to open his first French gallery in a glass-roofed manor house on the Rue de Ponthieu. This space recently hosted the Picasso et Maya, Père et fille exhibition, focused on the fascinating relationship between the artist and his child-muse. The event has been a storming success, and will be followed by work by Iranian-American artist Y.Z. Kami.

Runway exhibitions

In an effort to exhibit large-scale works of art, Larry Gagosian then turned his talents to a former aircraft hangar at Le Bourget airport two years later. When he showed the new find to his friend, architect Jean Nouvel, the Frenchman was immediately won over by the 50s/60s industrial building. In just a few months he had renovated the 18,000sqft space, which boasts an ideal location near a runway welcoming the private jets of wealthy collectors, just 20 minutes from central Paris. This was an important development for the art dealer, who was looking to appeal to as many people as possible

Gagosian Gallery and Jean Nouvel, a winning artistic combination

“Enhancing without adulterating” was the mantra championed by Jean Nouvel in the face of this enormous setting spread across two floors thanks to a 3,700sqft mezzanine level. This was the perfect space for showcasing the exhibited works. And don’t forget the Frenchman is accustomed to working in cultural spaces. The Arab World Institute, the Quai Branly Museum and the Louvre Abu Dhabi are just a few of his successful projects. Alongside his studio, Atelier Jean Nouvel, the architect has also founded the Jean Nouvel Design agency, whose creations were actually exhibited at the Gagosian Gallery Paris in 2011.
